Sixteen months after their State Semifinal appearance, the Blazers got down to business with a 5-0 shutout of the visiting Blake Bengals in the home opener of this abbreviated fall season. The Blazers had the better of the play for much of the first half, but couldn’t turn lengthy possessions into quality scoring chances. That would change very quickly as the second half unfolded. Senior Captain Sophia Kim came very close to scoring in the first minute of the half, driving in off of the left flank, but it was foreshadowing of things to come. Chances were coming fast and furious, and the Bengals were having difficulty defending the onslaught. Finally, in the 56th minute, the patience and determination of the Blazers paid off, when sophomore Madga Goles slipped a through ball to Kim, who made no mistake from close range. Just over a minute later, a beautiful, arching corner kick from Senior Captain Indigo Suchar, was headed into the far side of the goal by an elated Kim, giving her a brace (2 goals) for the game. A minute after this, Goles found herself alone in front of as a corner kick from Kim bounced through the six-yard box, and she calmly tucked it away for a 3-0 lead. In the 61st minute, it was time for Freshman Elena Fernandez to notch her first Varsity goal, with a nifty back heel from point blank range, after taking a pass from Kim. The final tally of this 8 minute offensive outburst came in the 64th minute, when Freshman Josie Gleason slashed through the midfield on the dribble and, when no defenders came in to close her down, she laced a shot past the Blake goalkeeper from 20 yards out.
So many positives to take away from this game. All 23 players got some quality minutes. Goalkeepers Simone Hargrove and Junior Arielle Granston shared a shutout. The defense, anchored by Senior Elise Kinyanjui and Junior Alli O’Neal-Freeman were strong when they needed to be and Senior Molly Salpekar excelled in the defensive midfield position. Senior Emilie Vigliotta’s forays down the right flank helped to ignite the second half scoring explosion and Junior Tilelli Zahar did an admirable job managing the center of the midfield. This is the first time in Blair Girls Soccer History that two freshmen have scored goals in the opening game of the season. Sophia Kim was chosen as the Woman of the Match, with 2 goals and 2 assists, including the game winner, a header goal on a corner kick (a rarity for Blair Girls soccer), and she had a part in each of the first 4 goals of the game.
Our next game is on Wednesday at Einstein at 7:15 p.m.
