Boys Varsity Soccer squad is staking their claim as a team to watch in the upcoming playoffs, as they extended their unbeaten streak to 5 games following a 3-0 victory played at Richard Montgomery. With their third straight shutout in as many games, the Blazer’s defense continues to dominate opponents and keep shooters at a safe distance. But the Blair defenders also added some flair to the evening by playing a role in all three goals.
The midfielders showed great ball movement and precise passing right from the starting whistle. At the 18th minute, defender James McGhee started a tiki-taka sequence with the midfielders that waltzed through opponent’s defensive line – McGhee to Walter Sosa to Nati Getachew to Sosa to Henok Azene – and that ended with Gio Garcia Lopez pumping the first goal into the upper corner by the far post. The game stayed 1-0 with just seconds remaining in the 1st half, when Defender Gilberto Ramirez Quincin launched a free kick into the box from 78 yards out. Forward Natinael Tesfaw gathered the ball on one hop and chipped it home to make it 2-0 at the half.
The Rockets fought hard and had their best scoring opportunities on the Blazer goal at the opening of the 2nd half, but their momentum stalled in the 16th minute. Defender Silas Reitsma charged forward from his defensive position to intercept a pass at the 27 yard mark. Reitsma juked a defender, then drilled the 3rd goal into the upper right corner from the top of the box.
